Mike Beck is a PhD candidate working under the supervision of Dr Mark Ainslie (Bulk Superconductivity Group) and Dr Chris Rodgers (Wolfson Brain Imaging Centre). He began his PhD, funded by the W.D. Armstrong fund for the Applications of Engineering in Medicine, investigating the potential for using superconducting bulks in portable NMR and MRI systems in October 2019. Prior to this, he obtained his M.Eng in Electrical and Electronic engineering from Cambridge University Engineering Department in 2016, and spent 3 years working as an engineering consultant at TTP plc. in the Cambridge area. He is interested in the development of sensitive low-cost measurement systems for use across a range of industries.

Research

Mike’s research focuses on the limitations to deployment of superconducting bulks within portable NMR and MRI systems, including maximum achievable sample size and trapping of strong, uniform magnetic fields within superconducting rings.
